How to Clean & Maintain Rubber Flooring for Gyms

Written by Zogics | October 16, 2019

You’ve put time, research and money into your rubber flooring. So, how do you get the most out of it? Well, you probably know that rubber flooring is incredibly low-maintenance. But low-maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance.

If rubber flooring were a person, it may be a gossip queen. It would share stories of people at their sweatiest; of dropped weights and over-enthusiastic cardio instructors. The foot traffic your floor gets is the groundwork (pun intended) for hundreds of stories. But we think that rubber flooring is the resilient, unsung hero of a facility. Some dirt and dings won’t destroy it. That is, as long as you do your due diligence.

High volumes of daily foot traffic may lead to a buildup of dirt and debris. While rubber flooring is moisture-resistant (reducing the risk of mold or bacteria growth), dirt can get caught in the textured surface of rubber floors. This could lead to dullness and discoloration if left alone.

How do I choose the right cleaner?

Picking out a cleaning solution may not top your list as one of the most fun things you can do for your facility, but it certainly is one of the most important. You don’t want your members to walk into a place smelling of bleach or harsh chemicals, and you definitely don’t want to use products that could damage and erode your flooring. One of the most important things to check with your rubber floor cleaner is to make sure it’s pH neutral. A harsh acidic cleaner will eat away at the flooring—always use a cleaner with a pH of 6.0–7.0. No more and no less.

To provide a comfortable experience for each and every member, it’s important for your staff to use quality janitorial cleaning supplies. That’s why we sell premium wholesale cleaning supplies that are made with fitness facility managers in mind, and at prices that you can afford.

Our Rubber Sport Flooring Cleaner & Degreaser is designed specifically for rubber flooring in your gym. It's safe for daily cleaning and strong enough for regular deep cleaning. Our cleaner features low toxicity, low odor (VOCs), and is readily biodegradable. You can use it daily with a regular, old mop and bucket or in automatic floor scrubbers.

Rubber flooring for gyms is extremely durable, and with these simple cleaning tips, you can help your rubber floor last a long time while maintaining its appearance.

How to clean rubber flooring for gyms

You should establish two cleaning routines when it comes to your commercial gym flooring: daily tasks and a weekly deep dive.

Daily, you’ll want to complete a quick vacuuming or dry dust mopping 1 – 3 times a day. (If your flooring is in a home gym, you can get away with once-a-week vacuuming sessions.) Make sure that you’re also mopping daily in a commercial setting.

We make our own rubber floor cleaner because we are dedicated to providing eco-friendly products and solutions. We also know you have invested a lot in flooring and you want it to last; after all, it's one of the first things people see. You don’t need harsh chemicals stripping it away.

Our Rubber Sport Flooring Cleaner & Degreaser is a neutral pH concentrated cleaner for use on vulcanized & recycled rubber flooring. It smells light and fresh (no fake fragrances here) and reduces wear patterns, extending your flooring lifespan. It’s concentrated too, so you’re getting the most bang for your buck (did we mention cases always ship free?).

When using this cleaner, you can get the job done in three easy steps.

  1. Dilute the solution in water. (1–2 oz. per gallon with a mop & bucket; 10 oz. per gallon with an autoscrubber)
  2. Use a mop & bucket for routine cleaning and an autoscrubber for regular deep cleaning.
  3. Occupy yourself for 5-7 minutes while the cleaner does it’s job. (When’s the last time you took a post-workout selfie, anyways?) Then mop up or wet vacuum excess with clean water.

Head here for a more detailed breakdown of this process.

Do I need an autoscrubber?

A floor cleaning routine needs to include a periodic deep cleaning with an autoscrubber. Auto scrubbers get all the damaging sweat, oils and chalk off the surface of your flooring, which increases the life of your investment.

Its a good idea to invest in an autoscrubber for long-term use. There are many models of autoscrubber floor cleaners to choose from. For instance, the Namco Floorwash 1000 Multi-Surface Floor Scrubber is ideal for confined, small spaces. It cleans floors with 2 counter-rotating brushes that scrub the surface while picking up dirty water. It’s also light-weight. The Namco 20" Battery Operated Auto Scrubber has a cleaning width of 20" to take care of any facility floor cleaning needs. When you need deep cleaning power quickly, the 20" Battery Auto Scrubber's got your back with an impressive 12,500 sq. ft./hour cleaning rate. Despite handling the toughest cleaning tasks, this unit is compact and ultra-quiet, allowing staff to clean anytime without disturbing guests.

If you have questions on which autoscrubber would best suit your needs, our customer service team is always available to answer any questions and walk you through your options. It’s an investment you don’t want to pass on.
