Cleaning and maintaining public restrooms is a crucial task for any business or organization that wants to provide a comfortable and hygienic environment for its customers or guests. However, the task of cleaning a public restroom can be overwhelming, especially if you're not sure where to start.

In this blog post, we will discuss the steps you can take to effectively clean and maintain your public restrooms.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Supplies

Before you begin cleaning, make sure you have all the necessary supplies on hand. This may include cleaning solutions, disinfectants, paper towels, toilet brushes, mops, and other equipment. It's also a good idea to have a checklist of the tasks that need to be completed, so you don't forget anything.

Step 2: Place Signage During Cleaning

When cleaning is underway, it's important to place signs around the restroom to indicate areas that are currently being cleaned. This will help to prevent customers or guests from accidentally coming into contact with cleaning products or equipment, and will also help to keep the cleaner safe. These signs should be placed in a visible location and should indicate which areas are currently being cleaned and when they will be finished.

Step 3: Empty the Trash

The first step in cleaning a public restroom is to empty the trash. This will not only make the space more visually appealing, but it will also eliminate any unpleasant odors. Be sure to use gloves when handling the trash, as it may contain potentially harmful materials.

Next, move on to cleaning the toilets. Begin by flushing the toilets, and then use a toilet brush and toilet cleaner to scrub the bowl, rim, and seat. Be sure to pay attention to any hard-to-reach areas, such as the space between the rim and the bowl. Once you've finished scrubbing, flush the toilets again to rinse away any remaining cleaner.

Step 5: Clean the Sinks and Countertops

After the toilets are clean, move on to the sinks and countertops. Use a cleaning solution and a rag or sponge to wipe down these surfaces, paying special attention to any areas that may have soap scum or hard water stains. Don't forget to clean the faucets and handles as well.

Finally, it's time to clean the floors. Sweep or dry mop the floors to remove any debris and dust. Then, use a wet mop or a mop with a cleaning solution to scrub the floors, making sure to get into all the corners and crevices. Our favorite tool for this task is the Bottle Rocket Mop. Once you've finished mopping, allow the floors to air dry or dry them with a clean towel or mop. Remember to place “wet floor” signs around the restroom until the floor is completely dry.

Step 7: Stock and Check

Once you have finished cleaning, be sure to restock the restroom with paper towels, soap, and commercial toilet paper. Check for any repairs that may be needed, such as a clogged drain, a broken tile, or a malfunctioning toilet.

Step 8: Disinfect

After the cleaning is completed, it is very important to disinfect all surfaces, including toilets, sinks, counters, and floors. This will help to kill any germs or bacteria that may be present, ensuring that the space is as hygienic as possible.

Cleaning refers to the removal of dirt and impurities including germs from surfaces. Cleaning alone does not kill germs. But by removing them, it decreases the number of germs and therefore any risk of spreading infection.

Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs. But killing germs remaining on a surface after cleaning further reduces any risk of spreading infection.

Sanitizing lies in between the two. According to www.flu.gov, sanitizing lowers the number of germs on surfaces to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements, while disinfecting removes bacteria and viruses completely. You sanitize a surface by cleaning or disinfecting it to reduce the risk of spreading infection. In essence, sanitizing destroys all forms of microbial life and is used mainly in healthcare and laboratory settings.

Step 9: Odor Control

Odor control is a crucial aspect of public restroom maintenance. Strong odors can be an indication of poor hygiene or a lack of maintenance, which can be off-putting to customers or guests. Therefore, it's important to regularly check the odor status of your public restrooms and address any issues as soon as possible.

Commercial air fresheners can be an effective way to control odors in public restrooms. They come in various forms such as sprays, automatic dispensers, and scented oils. In addition, we recommend using urinal screens to reduce splashback and help keep the area clean and free of odors.

Keeping your public restrooms clean and well-maintained is crucial for the health and comfort of your customers or guests. By following the steps outlined above, you can ensure that your public restrooms are always clean, hygienic, and pleasant to use. Remember to always use disposable gloves, wear a mask and regularly check on the supplies and equipment to make sure everything is in good condition.
